How do capos affect tuning stability?
A capo is a simple tool that does one job — clamp strings down at a fret — and yet it manages to cause a surprising number of tuning complaints. Almost all of them come down to pressure and placement, not some inherent flaw in the concept.
Too much clamping force
A capo that clamps harder than necessary pulls the string sharp, the same way pressing too hard with your finger does. Cheap capos, or capos with non-adjustable tension, are frequent offenders here. If your guitar sounds noticeably sharp the moment you clamp a capo on, that's almost always excess pressure, not a tuning problem with the guitar itself.
Placement matters more than people think
A capo placed too far from the fret (rather than snug right up against it, like your finger would be) increases the chance of pulling the string out of tune or causing buzz. Placement inconsistency is also why the same capo can behave differently from one use to the next if you're not consistent about where you clamp it.
Uneven pressure across strings
Some capo designs apply more even pressure across all six strings than others. Curved capos matched to your fretboard radius tend to perform more consistently than a flat-bar design forced onto a curved board, especially on acoustics with pronounced radius.
What actually helps
Use a capo with adjustable tension if you can, set it to the minimum pressure that stops the strings from buzzing, and place it right against the fret rather than in the middle of the space behind it. Re-tune (or at least spot-check) after clamping — a capo interacting with an already-imperfect setup can expose small intonation issues that weren't obvious open.
