How do I fix a buzzing bridge pin?
Good news: this is one of the easiest buzzes to run down, because bridge pins are dumb simple objects with a short list of ways to fail. If you haven't ruled out the other usual buzz suspects yet, it's worth a quick gut check before you assume it's the pins.
What's actually happening
A bridge pin's whole job is holding the ball end of the string firmly against the bridge plate inside the guitar. When a pin buzzes, it's usually because it isn't seated fully, isn't making solid contact with the string's ball end, or has worn down enough to rattle around in its hole like a loose tooth.
The usual suspects
- Pin not fully seated. Pull it, make sure the slot lines up with the string's ball end (slot facing the fretboard, roughly), and reseat it firmly. No half measures.
- Worn or mismatched pins. Plastic pins wear out, and cheap replacement sets aren't always cut to match your bridge holes' taper. A loose-fitting pin is basically a rattle waiting to happen.
- String ball end sitting wrong. If the ball end slipped past the pin instead of getting pulled snug against it, you'll get buzz — or worse, a string that pops loose mid-song.
- A worn or oversized pin hole. Less common, but if the bridge itself has worn out or was drilled loose from the start, pins won't seat with enough friction no matter how hard you shove them.
The fix, roughly
Restring it properly: ball end seated against the pin, pin pushed down firmly while you bring the string up to tension, slot facing the neck. If that doesn't kill the buzz, the pins themselves (or the holes) probably need attention.
If you've reseated everything and it's STILL buzzing, there's likely more going on with the bridge plate itself. Worth a look before you keep guessing and blaming the pins.
