How do I know if my bridge is lifting?
A lifting bridge is one of the more serious things that can happen to an acoustic guitar, and catching it early is the difference between a quick reglue and a risky repair that ruins your week and empties your wallet.
Your bridge is glued to the top of your guitar. It lives under constant, relentless pull from string tension trying to peel it forward off the wood, forever, without ever taking a break. Over years — sometimes sped along by heat, humidity swings, or a glue joint that's simply run out of patience — that bond starts failing, letting the back edge of the bridge lift away from the top just enough to matter.
Progression of the problem
- Action creeps higher with no other obvious explanation, because a lifting bridge is quietly recalcing the geometry between your strings and fretboard behind your back. Little bastard.
- Changes in tone when a bridge that isn't fully glued down anymore can't transfer string energy efficiently, so the guitar starts sounding duller and less alive, like it's playing through a pillow.
- Visible distortion in the top around the bridge, sometimes paired with bellying, since a lifting bridge and a bellying top are usually two faces of the exact same tension problem.
- A visible gap at the back edge of the bridge where it meets the top — sometimes subtle, sometimes obvious enough to see daylight or slide a thin card straight into it. If you can see it without really trying, it’s REAL BAD.

Some bellying is normal on pretty much any guitar; it's when it's driven primarily by the body between the soundhole and bridge sinking that you're treading thin ice.
Once easy way to check this out is to look at your guitar in profile. Visually, line up the top edge of the guitar with top edge of the bridge. They should mostly line up. If the bridge is tilting towards the sound hole like the top one, bring it in.
What you should not do… ever
Sluff any kind of glue into the gap. Wood glue, super glue, epoxy (definitely not epoxy!!!)… anything. While it seems intuitive, it’s a waste of time. It does nothing, and it makes the repair process slower.
You can glue a partially lifted bridge, and you don’t want to. The bridge needs to be cooked and peeled off. Any glue, schumtz or loose wood needs to be sanded off. I tooth plane for 3D adhesion – and because you probably don’t know what I mean, you should not F around with this. Then it needs to be glued and clamped very carefully.
This is the most consequential and precarious joint on your guitar. Much less structurally sound than your neck joint. And, when it pops, it will be a dramatic event that might cause minor injuries. Don’t mess.
Why you shouldn't wait
A partially lifted bridge under continued string tension gets worse, not better — it has no interest in healing itself — and if it lifts far enough, it can tear the top's finish or wood fibers right along with it, turning a clean, cheap reglue into a genuinely ugly repair. Catch it at the "small gap" stage and it's a quick fix. Wait, and you're gambling with your top.
