What is break angle?
Break angle is the angle a string makes as it goes over a critical contact point — most commonly the saddle or the nut — and it's one of those quiet setup factors that most players have never heard of but absolutely affects tone, sustain, and mechanical function.
At the saddle
This is the angle the string makes as it comes down from the bridge pin (on an acoustic) and bends over the saddle before heading up the neck. A steeper break angle presses the string down against the saddle with more force, which improves how efficiently vibration transfers from the string into the saddle and, ultimately, into the top — more break angle, generally, more efficient energy transfer and better tone and volume, up to a reasonable point.
Why break angle can go wrong
If a saddle has been lowered too many times (chasing lower action without addressing the real underlying cause, like a neck angle issue), the break angle over it can become too shallow. A too-shallow break angle reduces string pressure on the saddle, which can cause a thin, weak tone, reduced sustain, and in bad cases, string buzz or rattle right at the saddle itself, since the string isn't seated firmly enough.
At the nut
A similar concept applies at the headstock end, particularly relevant on guitars with a straight (non-angled) headstock, which sometimes require string trees or retainer bars specifically to increase break angle over the nut on the higher strings, ensuring they seat properly and don't rattle or slip out of their slots.
Why this matters practically
If you've had your saddle lowered multiple times chasing lower and lower action, and your tone or sustain has quietly gotten worse without anyone mentioning why, break angle is a very plausible, often-overlooked culprit. It's also a big part of why "just lower the saddle more" isn't a free, consequence-free way to fix high action — at some point, you're trading away tone and mechanical function to get there.
