What is break angle?
Nobody ever asks about break angle. Their eyes glaze over when I start talking about it.
Players will obsess over pickup brands, wood species, and the mystical tone of a brass nut, but completely ignore the one geometric detail that's quietly wrecking their power, tone and sustain: break angle. I’m serious. Like a heart attack. It deserves way more attention than it gets.
OK, what am I talking about? Check this out, below. It’s a nice strong angle. This puts crazy pressure on the face of the guitar, transferring a nice rich, powerful tone from the strings to the body of the guitar for resonance. This is a good thing.
Don’t do me like that
OK, now look at this sad state of affairs. The string is flaccid, just draped across the saddle like an old noodle. No angle, barely a curve. This is a guitar that will sound weak and lifeless — quietly, too. No good.
Here's the hot take: most shallow break angle problems are entirely self-inflicted. You (or some well-meaning friend or tech) shaved down the bridge chasing low action, despite an obvious neck angle problem — see Neck Resets • Does my guitar need a neck reset?. In any case, congratulations, you just relocated the symptom, broke the geometry along the way, and didn’t fix the new problem you created. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Ramping the bridge
The remedy requires a bit of surgery – ramping the bridge down to the string slots. You can see it in the diagram below, courtesy of Gerry at Haze Guitars. I use a Dremel tool with a cylindrical file to make little paths that allow the strings to dive into the bridge earlier on their way to the pin.
Break angle at the nut
Same story, different end of the guitar. This one shows up a lot on straight, non-angled headstocks. That’s when you see string trees or retainer bars. They increase break angle over the nut on the higher strings. Without that added downforce, strings don't seat properly — they rattle and buzz in their slots, and occasionally just pop out of them like they've got somewhere better to be. They really don't, it’s where they belong.
Check out the E and A strings on this poor P Bass. They’re practically flat coming over the nut. Normally, I’d be ecstatic that there is so little string wound onto the tuning peg. Not here, not at all. In this case, there should be maybe three more winds, which would create some real angle.
