What's a bone nut vs a Tusq nut?

Bone or Tusq? Either can make a great nut—provided the slots are cut right. The real question is whether you want natural material with a little variation, or an engineered substitute built for consistency. There’s also the vegan thing. I do a bunch of work for Joe from Nothing, Nowhere. Such a cool dude, and totally vegan. Does not want bone on his axes. This is a great case for using Tusq nuts.

Bone

Natural, dense, and gloriously inconsistent. Real bone has been the standard forever because it's hard, transfers vibration efficiently, and takes a clean, durable slot cut. The tradeoff: it's a natural material, so density and consistency vary piece to piece, and it takes real skill and time to shape and fit correctly. No shortcuts. But, it smells cool when you sand it, so there’s that.

Tusq

An engineered synthetic built specifically to mimic bone's density and tonal transfer, but with total consistency piece to piece. No natural variation, no porosity headaches, and it machines to precise specs every time. Some players swear Tusq sounds nearly identical to bone. Others insist they can tell. Fair warning: double-blind guitar tone comparisons are notoriously unreliable, even among players who are VERY sure of their own ears. For my ears, it’s 1:1.

The practical differences that actually matter

Consistency: Tusq wins, hands down, by design.
Character: Bone's natural variation is exactly what some players and builders are chasing.
Cost and availability: Tusq is generally cheaper and easier to find in consistent, pre-shaped blanks.
Tradition: Bone is the expected look on higher-end and vintage-style builds. Some players care about that. Some genuinely don't.

Which should you get?

Honestly, either one is a legit upgrade over a cheap stock plastic nut. If you just want a durable, well-cut nut that's not the weak link in your setup, both options get you there. Stop overthinking it. Usually I have what I have in the size I have it, and that’s what you get unless you want to wait for a special order.
