Nitro, poly, or shellac: what's actually on your guitar (and does it matter)?
Depends who you ask, and everybody's got a hot take. Ask a vintage guitar snob and they'll swear nitro is alive and poly is glorified Tupperware. Ask a factory cranking out ten thousand guitars a month and they'll tell you poly is consistent, durable, and doesn't require a padded room and a prayer to spray. Here's the annoying truth: they're both right, and neither one is giving you the whole story.
Nitrocellulose lacquer
Nitro is thin. Stupid thin — a few thousandths of an inch once it's cured. That's part of why nitro guitars get all the "it breathes!" talk: there's just less mass and stiffness sitting on the wood, choking it out. It also ages like a person, not a countertop. It yellows, it checks (those spiderweb cracks you see on old guitars), and it wears through at contact points after decades of you actually playing the thing.
The catch: nitro is soft, sensitive, and a little dramatic. Heat bothers it. Temperature swings crack it. And it does NOT play nice with certain rubbers, plastics, and solvents. Leave a rubber-backed capo case pressed against it all summer and congratulations, you've got a permanent souvenir.
Polyurethane / polyester
Poly is thick, tough, and about as emotionally stable as finishes get. It cures hard and shrugs off contact that would leave nitro crying in the corner. No checking, no yellowing, none of that "vintage patina" everyone gets misty-eyed about — because poly just doesn't age that way.
Does poly "choke" resonance? Real argument, real luthiers, real egos involved. I'm not refereeing that fight here. What I WILL say: your poly finish is not why your guitar doesn't sound like a 1950s Martin. Wood selection, bracing, and build quality are doing way more of that work than the stuff on top.
Shellac and French polish
This is the one the vintage crowd doesn't even bring up because it's rarer, but it's the OG finish — around long before nitro existed. Shellac is a natural resin (made from the the secretion of a bug native to India and Thailand) dissolved in alcohol, applied by hand with a pad in that meditative, borderline-monastic process called French polishing. No spray booth, no compressor, just patience and a lot of repetitive elbow work.
It's often thinner than nitro. THINNER. If "it breathes!" is your whole argument for nitro, shellac might win that fight before it starts. It's also why classical and flamenco guitars, plus a handful of boutique and vintage-style acoustics, still get finished this way: maximum resonance, minimum mass.
The tradeoff is brutal, though. Shellac is soft and has a built-in weakness: alcohol dissolves it. Spill a drink, use the wrong cleaner, or sweat on it during a long gig, and you can literally re-melt the finish. It scratches if you look at it wrong, and repairing it invisibly takes real skill. This is a finish for guitars that live in climate-controlled rooms and get babied, not gigging workhorses.
So which one do you have, and does it matter?
For maintenance? Yes — poly tolerates more, nitro needs babying, and shellac needs the full VIP treatment (keep it away from alcohol, sweat, and anything solvent-adjacent). For tone? Way less than the internet wants you to believe. If you don't know what's on your guitar, just treat it like nitro and baby it anyway. Worst case, you were more careful than you needed to be. Best case, you dodged a summer-capo-case disaster.
