How do I keep my guitar safe in different seasons, or what's the ideal humidity for storing a guitar?
The store spent five minutes upselling you a case and thirty seconds saying "you'll want a humidifier." That's it. That's the whole masterclass. Here's what they should've told you. You just spent real money on a guitar, so let's talk about the one maintenance fact that actually matters: relative humidity.
40 to 60 percent, with 45 to 50 percent being the sweet spot most guitars are actually built and voiced around. This isn't a number some marketing team pulled out of a hat — it's roughly the humidity level most instrument wood gets stabilized at during manufacturing, which is exactly why straying too far from it in either direction turns your guitar into a science experiment you didn't sign up for.
Why nobody tells you this
Because "keep it between 40 and 60 percent humidity" doesn't fit on a receipt, and most sales floors are optimized for closing the sale, not for the next ten years of your guitar's life. But the range exists for a real reason: wood expands when it drinks up moisture and contracts when it dries out — it's basically always breathing, whether you want it to or not.
Guitars are built with wood dried and stabilized to a specific moisture content, and the whole structure (top, bracing, neck joint, finish) is calibrated to that baseline like a tiny, stubborn ecosystem. Go too dry and wood shrinks: cracks, fret sprout, finish checking, all the fun stuff. Go too humid and wood swells: bellying, high action, softened glue joints, and a tone that goes from "ringing" to "asleep."
Why this matters even more if you bought an acoustic
Acoustic guitars have thin, mostly unsupported tops doing double duty as structural support AND the thing making your guitar loud — a lot of responsibility for a piece of wood the thickness of a skinny pancake. That's why acoustics are so much twitchier about humidity than solid-body electrics. Electrics aren't bulletproof either, but without a paper-thin vibrating top and internal bracing in the mix, the stakes are lower.
The actual masterclass: how to maintain it
- Buy a hygrometer. An actual one — not "the air felt kind of dry today" energy, an actual device that measures actual humidity.
- Put it where your guitar lives — case or room — and just check it occasionally.
- If it's reading 40 to 60 percent, relax. Leave the guitar on the stand and go about your life.
- If it's drifting outside that range, act. A case humidifier if the guitar lives in its case; a room humidifier or dehumidifier if it hangs out on a stand in a space you control.
- Do this consistently through the seasons — winter heating and summer AC are the two biggest offenders — instead of only reacting after a crack shows up.
The bottom line
This is the rare piece of guitar advice that's cheap, simple, and actually does what people claim it does. No mysticism, no debate, no vintage-snob-vs-factory-tech cage match — just buy the hygrometer. If the store didn't tell you that when they sold it to you, consider this the follow-up appointment they skipped.
