Why do some guitars have zero fret?
A zero fret is exactly what it sounds like: an actual fret placed right where the nut would normally end the fretboard, and it changes how the open string's height and tone are determined, in a way that some builders and players genuinely prefer.
What it actually does
On a standard nut, the string rests in a slot cut to a specific depth, and that slot determines the open string's height and, indirectly, its tone. On a zero-fret design, the string instead rests directly on a fret — identical in height and profile to every other fret on the neck — while the "nut" becomes purely a spacing guide with no height-determining slots at all.
Why builders use it
The main argument: it makes the open string behave more consistently with the fretted notes, since the open string now sits at the same height and contact profile as every fretted note, rather than at a height determined by how precisely a nut slot was cut. Some players and builders feel this evens out tone and feel between open and fretted notes. It also removes a common source of setup error — a nut slot cut too high or too low — since the zero fret standardizes that measurement across the whole neck.
The tradeoffs
A zero fret wears exactly like any other fret, which means it's subject to the same wear-and-buzz issues over time, and it needs replacing as part of a normal fret job rather than being a separate, rarely-touched component like a traditional nut. It's also just less common, which means some players find it unfamiliar or assume it's a defect when it's simply a design choice.
Should you care?
Not really, unless you're shopping for a guitar and want to know why the nut area looks different than you expected. It's a legitimate, deliberate design choice with real reasoning behind it — not a shortcut or a downgrade.
