Why do my volume or tone knobs crackle when I turn them?
That static, crackly, sputtering noise every time you twist a knob isn't hum, and it isn't some looming wiring catastrophe. It's oxidation — the metal contact inside the pot slowly corroding, with dust and grime piling on for good measure. It's a pot doing exactly what a pot does after too much time goes by without a cleaning — nothing more dramatic than that. They probably need a cleaning.
What's actually happening inside the knob
A pot (potentiometer) has a resistive strip with a little wiper arm that slides across it as you turn the knob, smoothly modulating resistance and, with it, your volume or tone. Over months and years, oxidation, dust, and general grime settle onto that strip like grime on a windshield. The wiper drags right through the mess, and every tiny interruption in contact gets amplified and blasted straight to your amp as a pop, scratch, or full dropout.
Age is the obvious culprit, but so is how much that guitar actually gets played. Counterintuitively, a guitar that just sits untouched in a case can crackle worse than one played every single day, because nothing's ever scraping that crud off the contacts. Smoky bars, damp basements, humid gig bags — all of it speeds the oxidation along. None of this means anything's broken. It just means the pot's been quietly collecting garbage while you weren't paying attention.
Cleaning vs. replacing
Most of the time, this is a cleaning job, not a funeral. A proper contact cleaner sprayed into the pot's housing, combined with working the knob through its full range over and over, burnishes that strip clean and brings back smooth, silent operation for pocket change. It's one of the most satisfying cheap fixes in guitar repair — five minutes of work for a problem that sounded like it should've cost you real money.

Once in a while, cleaning genuinely doesn't cut it — the resistive strip has worn unevenly into dead spots, or the pot's guts have cracked or failed outright. That's when you actually need a new pot, not another spray and a pray. The tell is simple: crackle across the whole sweep cleans up fine. A hard cutout or dead zone at the exact same point every single time means the pot itself is done.
Pickup selector switches run on the same sliding-contact idea as pots, just shaped differently, so they get crackly and intermittent for the identical reason — and they get fixed the identical way.
Don’t ignore it
A crackly pot isn't actively hurting your guitar, but it's not going to heal itself either, and "just a little scratchy" has a nasty habit of turning into a dead signal at the worst possible moment — mid-solo, mid-gig, mid-everything. It's a cheap, fast fix now, or a genuinely annoying surprise later. Let's knock it out before your guitar picks the worse option for you.
