What's the difference between a setup and a fret job?

These get lumped together constantly because they're often done at the same time, but they're solving genuinely different problems, and yes, you can absolutely need one without the other. A setup

Physical adjustments to the instrument that optimize playability: truss rod relief, action at the nut and saddle, intonation, sometimes nut slot depth. Nothing about the frets themselves changes one bit. If your frets are in good shape and your guitar just needs to be dialed in properly, a setup alone gets you there.

A fret job

Deals with the actual condition of the frets — leveling out wear and inconsistency, or in a full refret, ripping them out and starting over. This is actual repair to the frets and fingerboard, not a tune-up of the guitar's overall configuration. Why they're often bundled

Here's the overlap: after a fret level or refret, the guitar needs a setup anyway, because the fret work changes the surface everything else — action, relief — gets measured against. That's why a lot of shops (mine included) bundle a setup into any fret work as standard practice, not some sneaky upsell. It's simply necessary to actually finish the job.

On the flip side, sometimes a setup doesn’t take without some fret work. Uneven or excessively flat frets can negate the good work of a setup, leaving your guitar in a disappointing place despite the adjustments.

When you need one but not the other

Frets fine, guitar just playing poorly — high action, even buzzing, bad intonation? That's a setup problem. Frets worn, buzzing at specific spots no matter how you adjust the action? That's a fret problem a setup alone won't touch, no matter how skillfully it's done.

The takeaway

Don't assume "setup" covers fret condition, and don't assume a fret job automatically includes dialing everything else in — though a competent shop handles both together when both are actually needed, since skipping one defeats the point of doing the other.
