What's the difference between electric and acoustic setups?
Here's the part nobody tells you: the math doesn't change. Not between acoustic and electric, not between guitar and bass, not even banjo. Your fingers are the same fingers no matter what you're holding, and the target is always identical — even pressure across every fret position and every string, so your hand never has to think about compensating. That's the actual goal of a setup. Everything else is just the road you take to get there.
The one goal: even pressure everywhere
A properly set up instrument should feel exactly the same to fret whether you're on the first fret or the fifteenth, the low string or the high one. No dead spots that demand extra muscle, no string that feels like cheese cutting wire compared to its neighbors.
Your fingers shouldn't have to learn a dozen different pressure settings across one neck — that's not skill, that's the instrument fighting you. I measure toward that exact same target on every fretted instrument that crosses my bench, because a finger pressing down on a fret doesn't know or care what kind of body is bolted to the other end of the neck.
So why do electric and acoustic setups look so different?
Because the road to "even pressure everywhere" runs through completely different terrain depending on the instrument, even though the destination never moves.
Structural differences that drive the setup
Acoustic guitars lean on raw string energy to drive an unamplified soundboard, so action height doubles as a volume and tone knob, not just a comfort setting — go too low and you're not just risking buzz, you're strangling the guitar's actual voice. Electric guitars get their volume from pickups and an amp, so the string doesn't have to work nearly as hard acoustically, which means the action can drop lower for speed and comfort without costing you a drop of volume.
Bridge and saddle adjustability
Most electrics hand you individually adjustable saddles — height and intonation, per string, often with nothing fancier than a screwdriver. Fast, precise, almost boring how easy it is. Most acoustics saddle you (pun intended) with one fixed piece of bone or plastic, so getting to that same even-pressure target usually means actually shaping or shimming the saddle itself. Same destination, way more elbow grease.
Why this matters to you
If someone hands you generic "setup" advice without asking whether you're talking acoustic, electric, bass, or banjo, take it with a grain of salt — the destination is identical, but the road there is not. This is where a bit of craft is critical, understanding how different kinds of instruments take adjustments.
