Facelift • Fret Polishing
Frets get really grungy. Dirt, sweat and oils build up on the fingerboard and the metal wire of your frets. Over time, all that unsightly grit actually creates friction that degrades your playing. Polishing resets the clock!
This service is included in every 55-Point Pro Setup!
Polishing frets and the underlying fingerboard requires a collection of solvents, abrasives, skill and patience. First, the entire fretboard is cleaned, scraping any grimy bits off carefully with a radiused edge tool. Frets are then polished with successive rounds of ever-finer abrasives. Finally, the whole fretboard is oiled for beauty, feel & longevity.
Rehab • Fret Level Crown, & Dress
Frets take a lot of abuse. They get pits & divets from string pressure. Bending strings grinds & mashes them down. Humidity and temperature can compress the fingerboard pushing them up unevenly or "sprouting" out the side.
This service also includes Fret Polishing above.
Frets are first leveled by sanding with a precision straight-edge to make them all uniform height.
Crowning restores a nice rounded profile to each fret to minimize string contact area for better tone.
Frets edges are then beveled towards the fingerboard for smooth, playing feel.
Beveling and crowning can leave sharp edges, so each fret is carefully filed to a smooth edge.
Fountain of Youth • Fret Replacement
Don't freak out about this! It's more affordable than you might think, and it's not just about your frets. Removing the frets allows me to sand & burnish the entire fingerboard creating a smooth, hard surface that plays like a dream.
This service also includes both services above!
When pits are too deep, or frets have worn too low, replacement is the best option!
Using specialized tools & techniques, all frets are carefully extracted from the fingerboard.
Even careful extraction can create small chips in unfinished fingerboards that must be repaired.
With frets removed and chips fixed, the fingerboard is sanded to a smooth radius.
Before refretting, it's time to clean the sawdust, old glue and other debris from the fret slots.
Frets are cut a little wider than the fingerboard, then pressed into place using a radius tool.
Glue is carefully applied into the fret slots to keep the ends down, and provide long-term hold.
Fret ends are carefully trimmed to fit the fingerboard width in prepartion for filing.
